Through
determination, hard bloody work, theoretical and practical study, and
an uncanny resemblance to Meat Loaf !!! Not the first iconic image of
male stardom that springs to mind, but a wonderful entertainer, full of
passion and emotion in his delivery, both vocal and physical. A fantastic
mask to hide behind. Never the kind of kid to naturally perform in front
of people, more the mirror and hairbrush type, throughout my teenage years
and twenties I got to realising that I could sing pretty well. Not normally
the type to blow my own trumpet either, after years of doing my best to
not look like Meat I finally gave up the ghost and went full throttle.
I think that loosing
my Dad to a wrongly diagnosed heart condition
15 years ago slowly helped me realise that standing in front of
people and singing was pretty much a walk in the park compared
with dealing with a terrible loss like that. I also wanted to cheer
my mum up in some way so I put in for Stars in Their Eyes,
got on the show for series 7 in 1996, and after much wrangling,
went out there and kicked some serious butt. I was very lucky that
the world of Tribute had space for me. Getting on the programme
is extremely hard, but making a living at it, that’s a miracle!!
The post-modern aesthetic
relies on four tightly inter-related
sets of concepts ; ‘parody and pastiche’, ‘prefabrication’,
‘intertextuality’, ‘bricolage’…. the visual
arts see the past as a
supermarket source that the artist raids for whatever s/he wants.
(Hayward, S. 1996)
It has been the combination
of years of performative experience and the opportunity to study my praxis
academically that have placed me in a position to offer a number of Tribute
shows that can appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.
When combined with the talents of
the professional musicians,
experienced singers,
sound engineers and DJs I employ,
I am able to create a live music
package to cover anything from a
1 hour show to a whole evening’s
entertainment.
It is my contention that, although the positive
response from an audience presented with a
particular genre of music is somewhat guaranteed, the inclusion of other
musical styles
and forms can make any entertainment package more inclusive
and increase the general sense of party spirit thus creating a feel good
factor.
Please note that all shows can be supplied self contained either; performed
against high quality backing tracks or with a 100% Live Band. Tribute
Shows available are Meet Loaf, Rokky Horror, Blues Brothers, Commitments,
Blues Brother / Soul Sister, Grease or any combination of all of them.
If there’s anyone out
there going through the talent contest / X Factor routine, forget it!!!
The judges know nothing and it’s a world of exploitation. Find out
who you truly are on stage, get an act together and get out there and
work real audiences. I was lucky; the combination of appearance and voice
enabled me to find a niche. Keep searching and you will find yours. Over
the last eleven years, I have had the privilege of working with some of
the best musicians, tribute acts, comedians and technicians in this and
other countries. I thank them all for the work, professionalism and fun
we’ve had. Very special thanks go to Nova Casper and Gerry Trew
(The World’s Best Tina Turner and Rod Stewart.) They were there
at my first pro gig, and I owe so much to them for giving me the raw materials
of entertainment. Big thanks also go to:
Granada TV, BBC TV, Meridian TV, Endemol Productions and Action Time TV,
2CR FM Radio (Graham Mack, Jane, Alan and Helen), Mathew Kelly, Nina Mischov,
Les Dennis, The Grumbleweeds, Rick Huxley of The Dave Clarke 5, Black
Lace, Gary Bushell, Paul Gill, Howie Cassey, Simon Wood, Tim Wedlake,
Bobby Burke, John Pease, Hugh Budden, Rebecca Fludgate (Dolfin Music),
‘Chopper’, John Iles, and my family (including the Gibbs)
for all their support over the years.
In my experience, there’s nothing chemical, alcoholic or psychological
(except ??) that can beat the
feeling you get from seeing your audience smiling, whooping, cheering
and crying to what you are
delivering on stage. I love it, and I am eternally thankful for being
able to experience all of this. I will sing and perform until I drop one
day, but I am also very proud of becoming qualified to teach in a professional
capacity, passing on a wealth of experience in terms of tackling stage
appearance and live performance, and ultimately giving something back.
